New Zealand middle distance runner Lucy Van Dalen is giving God the credit for helping her make it to the London Olympics. She has now completed her time at the Olympics after making it all the way to the semi-finals in the 1500-meter race.
Van Dalen said she had been focused on finishing college this past year and only qualified to go to London through prayer and trusting in God.
"If you don't limit yourself in areas of your life, God can use you in so many different ways. He's really shown me this year just to trust in Him and if I do that, crazy things can happen," Van Dalen," she told Athletes in Action.
"And so after college I had like a month to qualify for the Olympics and I knew I was in good shape, and I went to two races," she said. "Well, after the first one I knew I could get the time, I just needed some divine intervention, so I emailed all my friends and asked, 'Can you please pray for me?'"
Shortly after she sent out that request, Van Dalen qualified for the Olympics.
"Oh man, like, I just feel like that was such an amazing answer to prayer because I had so many people praying for me, and I really just trusted in God in that race, and so here I am, it's really exciting," she said.
Van Dalen said other Christians on New Zealand's team have been a big support for her at the Olympics as well, praying for her and encouraging her in her faith.
Now she has her sights set on the 2016 Rio Olympics.
"Hopefully in four years, my sister and I will be there together," Van Dalen told Yahoo! Sport New Zealand. "It's definitely something we want to do."
