Ad Feedback Hamburg, Germany, has become the first city in the country to officially recognize Islamic holidays by allowing Muslims employees and students to take time off to celebrate.
The announcement made Tuesday by Hamburg's mayor, Olaf Scholz, followed an agreement between city officials and local Muslim groups.
Scholz said he hopes the deal will encourage other German cities to follow suit. The city said it has similar agreements with Christian and Jewish groups.
A growing number of Muslims estimating 150,000 make up the city's population of almost 2 million people.
Conservative and right-leaning groups are concerned by the growing presence of Islamic culture in their community.
Berlin police are now on alert after one of the groups said it's planning protests outside Islamic worship sites throughout the German capital.
