Death Toll Rises in Iran Quakes; Rescues Halt

Iranian authorities revised the number of those killed in two earthquakes in the area to 306, after rescuers called off the search for survivors.
More than 3,000 people were injured by the 6.4 and 6.3 magnitude earthquakes that shook the nation's mountainous northeast region on Saturday.
Some 300,000 people live in the region bordering Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Iranian television reported at least six villages have been totally leveled and another 133 were heavily damaged. An estimated 36 aftershocks caused widespread panic.
Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. A 6.6-magnitude earthquake that struck in 2003 killed 26,000 people and leveled the city of Bam in southeast Iran.
